After months of swings and misses, the fake news media finally thought they had the smoking gun to take down Donald Trump.
So-called “journalists” would succeed where Robert Mueller failed.
But then this MSNBC host was forced to tearfully admit a mistake that could end his career.
After Robert Mueller failed to charge anyone with conspiring with Moscow during the 2016 election, Americans thought the Russian collusion hoax was finally dead and buried.
They thought wrong.
After Deutsche Bank informed a judge that they had some of Donald Trump’s tax returns, MSNBC’s “Last Word” host Lawrence O’Donnell breathlessly reported that a single source told him the tax returns showed Donald Trump’s loans were co-signed by Russian oligarchs.
This was the smoking gun that would finally prove the President colluded with the Russians.
But as usual, the story collapsed within a matter of hours.
President Trump’s lawyers fired off a letter to MSNBC demanding a retraction for what they deemed a false and defamatory story.
“These statements are false and defamatory, and extremely damaging. The only borrowers under these loans are Trump entities, and Mr. Trump is the only guarantor,” Trump attorney Charles Harder thundered.
Harder then demanded a retraction.
“Demand is hereby made that Mr. O’Donnell and NBCU immediately and prominently retract, correct, and apologize,” Harder added.
Harder’s letter paid immediate dividends.
The following night, MSNBC’s O’Donnell went on the air and apologized for reporting unsubstantiated information.
O’Donnell admitted he had no idea if what he reported was even true.
“Last night, on this show, I discussed information that wasn’t ready for reporting. I repeated statements a single source told me about the president’s finances and loan documents with Deutsche Bank.”
O’Donnell continued, “Saying ‘if true’ as I discussed the information was simply not good enough. I did not go through the rigorous verification and standards process here at MSNBC before repeating what I heard from my source. Had it gone through that process, I would not have been permitted to report it.”
O’Donnell directly apologized for reporting fake news and cited the President’s lawyers’ letter as the reason he retracted his story.
“I should not have said it on air or posted it on Twitter. I was wrong to do so. This afternoon, attorneys for the president sent us a letter asserting the story is false. They also demanded a retraction. Tonight, we are retracting the story. We don’t know whether the information is inaccurate. But, the fact is, we do know it wasn’t ready for broadcast, and for that, I apologize,” O’Donnell concluded.
President Trump mocked O’Donnell’s fake news embarrassment on social media.
“Crazy Lawrence O’Donnell, who has been calling me wrong from even before I announced my run for the Presidency, even being previously forced by NBC to apologize, which he did while crying, for things he said about me & The Apprentice, was again forced to apologize, this time for the most ridiculous claim of all, that Russia, Russia, Russia, or Russian oligarchs, co-signed loan documents for me, a guarantee. Totally false, as is virtually everything else he, and much of the rest of the LameStream Media, has said about me for years. ALL APOLOGIZE!” the President tweeted.
